Rocky Ridge Farm

The collection of Rocky Ridge Farm pictures continues on this page. Laura and Almanzo loved this home especially. It's no wonder why!

Rocky Ridge home

A view of Laura's Rocky Ridge home with some of the surrounding property.  If you will notice the fence has two posts that are larger than the others.  They have hinges on them still and must have been the original drive to the house.  The driveway is way off to the side now.

Prairie girl imageThe Wilders had one of the best farms in the area with poultry, horses, goats, hogs, cows, sheep, apple trees, vegetables and I am sure much more.  The farm was at one point 200 acres and they finally retired and sold much of the farm with some percentage being paid to them after the sale.  I guess small farms are not profitable anymore as there is nothing left of the farm.  No barns, no apple trees, and no hen houses.  The land is still there although much of it is privately owned.

Side entrance of Rocky Ridge Farm

This is the side entrance of Rocky Ridge that everyone
taking the tour enters.

This photo was taken of Laura's house from a different side.  Again notice the picture window in the corner of the house.  On the inside there are places to sit or lay down in the window.

They left the house as it was when Laura died.  There is even the calendar still hanging with the month (Feb) and year (1957) of her death and some birthday cards she had opened and read (she died just a few days after her 90th birthday).  The house and museum is a treasure house full of things from Laura and Almanzo's past.  There are so many things there I will only go over some of them.  The clock that Almanzo gave to Laura their first Christmas in DeSmet is still there.  If you will remember from the books Almanzo went to town to sell some hay and couldn't find a buyer so instead he traded it for the clock.  Almanzo wound the clock everyday until his death in 1949.  The glass bread plate that survived the fire in "The first four years" is there.  There is also a lapdesk that Almanzo made for Laura that traveled with them after they left DeSmet.
